Nothing To Remember

Annie opens her eyes and scans the empty hospital room she’s in. She is hooked to machines, and she feels a soreness at her rib cage and on her face. She tries to touch her face with her hand, and the handcuffs stops her. She rattles the cuffs in disbelief.

She thinks to herself. What’s going on? What happened?

Annie thinks back and she gets flashes of her boss punching her in the face. She winces at the thought. Why am I in handcuffs?

Annie remembers she wanted to talk to her ex-boss, who was also her ex-boyfriend, Travis, and demand her job back. They had a tumultuous relationship, so she decided to bring her firearm for protection. She remembers knocking on his house door.

Travis answered the door. “What are you doing here?”

Annie blanks out. She looks to the hospital room door. She sees the window blinds are open and a police officer is standing in the hallway. He sees she is awake. She closes her eyes again, trying to understand how she got in this situation. The officer enters the room. Annie looks up at him.

“Why am I handcuffed? I’m beaten and in a hospital bed!”

The officer shakes his head. “So you think you shouldn’t be under arrest?”

“I don’t remember what happened.”

“According to witnesses, you pushed your way into your boss’s home, and killed him and his wife. The kids were hiding, and they called the police. Now that you are awake I can read you your rights.”

Annie is stunned.
